J. Thor Productions, Inc. has become a gobo dealer for Rosco. We can provide standard or custom gobos for your events. What is a gobo some might ask? A gobo is a stencil made out of metal or glass that is placed in a lighting fixture and projects the image on a surface. The term “gobo” is an acronym for “Goes Before Optics”. Gobos are used in specialty lights that are designed to shine through the gobo stencil and project the design onto a surface. A surface can be a wall, floor, prepared backdrop, or side of a building. Gobos can project any shapes, signs, and logos on these surfaces which makes them perfect for promoting your brand or tying in with your theme.
Gobos are generally made from either metal or glass and are available in various sizes. The sizes are based on the lights being used to project them. Steel gobos are the most common, affordable, and are more durable than glass. The design is cut out of a piece of metal to allow the light to project through. While steel gobos are more affordable and quicker to make they are limited in the quality and integrity of many designs. Letters and number like (A,O,R,P,Q,B,4,6,8,9) need to include a connecting piece of metal to form the letters correctly.
The graphic to left is a steel gobo with these connecting pieces, the gobo on the right is glass therefore leaving the original design as it was created.
Glass gobos offer the ability to project more complex designs. The design is etched on a piece of high temperature glass. This allows for a more polished projection. There are several options when using glass gobos. We offer black and white, 2 color and full color gobos. Due to the nature of the process glass gobos are more expensive. Care must be taken in maintaining the mirror finish of glass gobos and to avoid chipping.
We have used gobos at conferences, gala dinners, product launches, and weddings. Check out some of the custom gobos we have created for clients this year or our gallery of events to see them in use.
