First Night St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg rings in the New Year with this annual alcohol-free event. There will be music, lights, dance, fire, bubbles, stories, creative fun and two fireworks displays. The first will be at 9 p.m. and the second at midnight. It’s free to wander around, but you need a button to participate in activities and enter venues. Organizers also point out that the buttons help fund the annual event, which relies heavily on volunteers. Some of the highlights this year:

-      Woo Aquarium: Several artists in the 600 block of Central Avenue have joined to light the way through Williams Park with tropical fish-themed lanterns to celebrate the life of St. Petersburg native and beloved artist Bill "Woo" Correira, who died recently.

-      20th Birthday Party: Local artist Jennifer Kucharik, is creating a huge "birthday cake," which will be set ablaze. There will also be huge versions of two party favorites, musical chairs and a giant game of Twister.

-      Banyan Tree Climbing. Join Pathfinder, an outdoor adventure and education program, to safely experience the thrill of scaling the towering St. Petersburg landmark tree.
